Thermal capacity of Energy Piles

Thermal capacity analysis

Energy Piles are concrete piles with built in geothermal pipes. Thus, the piled foundation of a building can serve both as structural and a heating/cooling supply element.

By applying information of the foundation pile layout, soil properties and thermal needs of the building, our in-house tool assesses the geothermal potential of the foundation.

The in-house tool is a commercial version of the model proposed in the PhD project (Alberdi-Pagola, M 2018, Design and performance of energy pile foundations. Aalborg University, Aalborg) designed and maintained by the author, who is now part of the cp test team.

This in-house tool provides information about:

  • Thermal capacity of the energy pile foundation over time to supply the heating and cooling needs of a building.
  • Ground loop temperature development over time resulting from the geothermal use.

The in-house tool can be applied for feasibility studies and concept designs in the early stages of 2018, Design and performance of energy pile foundations. Aalborg University, Aalborg) designed and maintained by the author, who is now part of the cp test team
